My wedding invites!

I am so excited to share my very own wedding invites on my blog today. After spending the last few years designing for others, it was a surreal experience to be my own {potentially worst} client. Nole, from the amazing blog Oh So Beautiful Paper, shared our invites yesterday but here is a little recap. And by little I mean really long winded, my apologies in advance.

Our invites were quite possibly the hardest thing I had to do for my wedding. Given the fact that I design wedding invitations for a living, there was a bit of “gentle ribbing” from friends and family about their expectations. And frankly, designing for yourself is very hard! We didn’t really have a theme going into our wedding but one thing that kept coming up was music and the colors black and white. Our save the date was based on the Rob Base song “It Takes Two” so we weren’t afraid to get a little weird. For the actual wedding, I used a line from a Biggie song that ended up being a repeating theme throughout our invites and day of pieces.

I knew I wanted the invite to be focused around a hand drawn illustration since that is what I love to do. We got married in the DUBMO neighborhood of Brooklyn which has some pretty awesome views. There is one iconic street that showcases the Manhattan Bridge with the Empire State Building nestled below; I chose that as our main image to draw. The invitation was printed in two parts then duplexed to #220 and printed on Crane Lettra. One of the important things for me was to have the invite sound like how we both actually speak. We have a very dry sense of humor and we really wanted that to come out in our copy.

For the RSVP card, I created a mini-letterpress record complete with glassine sleeve. I paired this up with a petite black, square envelope and had our return address letterpressed in matte silver on the front. The record was little, roughly 4″ x 4″ so it was easy enough for our guests to ship back to us.

My personal favorite detail was the envelope liner! My friend is a photographer and when looking through her pictures, I saw one of a guy with knuckle tattoos. As soon as I saw that, I knew I wanted to incorporate that same idea into our suite somehow. One I realized that “BROOKLYN” fit on the knuckles, it was a done deal! I really had my heart set on black envelopes so I knew addressing them would be an issue. In came the ridiculously talented Jenna of Love, Jenna calligraphy. She created the perfect look for our suite complete with little details to match back to our design.

We did not do a wedding website but instead provided our guests with an insert chalk full of how to spend a perfect winter weekend in NYC + Brooklyn. This was printed flat on kraft paper.

I finished the suite off with a black + gold twine {from the awesome Knot + Bow} and had a die cut tag created to hold everything together. I love little silhouettes and create one of our hair to use throughout our suite as a continual theme. Overall, we wanted our invites to feel classic, set the tone for our wedding but most importantly to make our friends and family laugh.

The last few bits are from some of our day of elements that we snuck into this shoot. I hope you like everything!

Modern Brooklyn Invites: Lauren and Jay

Hello! Back from the depths of the design underworld. I’ve been keeping my head and pen down over the last few weeks leaving this poor little blog in the dust. But alas, we are back!

I have been wanting to share Lauren and Jay’s wedding invitations since they were still in the proof form! Lauren and Jay {stars of our comic book save the date} had a blow out bash at Brooklyn’s The Green Building back in October. When I say this bride left no stone unturned, I mean it. She dotted every I and crossed every T when it came to this wedding which made designing her suite incredibly easy. Lauren kept it pretty simple in terms of the overall look but killed it with the details. She knew right away that she wanted to have them letterpress printed. I drew a brick pattern that played off the look of The Green Building and had that blind impressed over the entire invite. Next up, we kept the typefaces very clean and simple. At first glance, it might come off as a very minimal invite but the more you dive in, the more the piece comes together. Lauren was using a “vampy” Cranberry for a punch of color so we had the edges painted with that detail in mind. Next up- the envelopes! Lauren had her heart set on using the very talented Love, Jenna for her envelopes and I have to say, she could not have done a better job! Jenna even added her touch on the invite by adding the “and” to the main piece. Jenna was inspired by Lauren’s vampy punch color and calligraphed her envelopes with a deep Cranberry color that worked incredibly well. We had her return address letterpressed using a matte gold for a little added luxe. We also lined both the main and return envelope with a soft gold liner. Lastly, Lauren sourced some of the cutest vintage stamps I’ve seen tying this entire piece together with a bit of charm.

{looking forward to sharing Lauren + Jay’s day of pictures soon, taken by the super talented Trent Bailey Photography}

SCD branding

Friend of Swiss Cottage and official SCD photographer, Susan Pittard, came by the office last week to see what was cooking. We loaded her up with some of our new SCD goodies and she pulled together a few pics for us. One of my favorite parts about this business is getting to play with our packaging and branding. Just last month we rolled out our new site and since then we’ve been adding a few other freshies to the mix.  The big ones were our new business cards + client thank you notes. I ended up screen printing these {white ink on kraft paper} after I fell in love with a recent client job that was also screen printed. Our new business cards are letterpress on one side and screen printed on the other side {and then duplexed to be #220 lbs.}. Patterns have always been a weakness for me so I created two new envelope liner patterns to play with. I found a great company online and created some cute custom ribbon as well. Of course, like any tortured artist, as soon as it was all complete I enjoyed it for about 5 minutes before I jumped to thinking about what I’ll change next time… the joys of being a creative!

Spreading the LOVE

Sending you all a little Valentine’s Day love from my neck of the woods. I always love taking Valentine’s Day to spread a bit of love to the people who matter most. It’s a little corny, but whatever, I dig it! xoxo

Illustrated Recipe

When Chantelle came to me to create an illustrated recipe for her friend’s wedding present, I jumped at the chance. I have been wanting to do a project like this for awhile but as many of you know, it’s very easy to get caught up with all the little things and those fun projects start to slowly make their way to the “some day” to-do list. I also thought this was a fantastic gift idea. Not only is it personal but it’s functional and a custom piece of art for your friends. Done and done. While creating this, I realized just how piecemeal I sometimes illustrate things. I took some pictures of the process so you can see the different stages of the illustration and compare it to the final piece. I started with hand lettering all the copy, then I drew all the illustrations in pencil and then outlined them all in black, waterproof ink. I then painted the images with watercolors and scanned all the pieces into Photoshop. A la Cribs, this is where the magic happens. I can fix all of my mistakes, play with the color, straighten out my hand type- basically just tighten it up and make it look all pretty. Hope you guys enjoy this one!

Vermont Love: Hilary and Mo

Hilary and Mo got married last Fall in a barn in Dorset, Vermont. Their guests all stayed at the Equinox Resort and Spa in Manchester, Vermont. First of all- what an amazing hotel! This place has everything: {said like Stefan from SNL}- a spa, clay shooting, hiking, yoga and even falconry- it’s a dream. Hilary and Mo could not have been a sweeter couple to work with. Their planner, Xochitl, from the amazing company AaB Creates, was a fantastic help and talent and together we all created a Wes Anderson inspired wedding suite to reflect both their personalities as well as the unique venue.

The entire suite was hand illustrated and printed flat on double thick Crane Lettra stock. We wanted it to have a sense of luxe to it so we let the paper bring that out. One of the main ideas Hilary and Mo brought to the table was concept of creating a “crest”. We didn’t want this to feel like Ye Olde Crest of England but more like what someone might get if Ralph Lauren and The Royal Tenenbaums had a baby- you follow? I started with the classic crest shape then added antlers to frame it up. Mo loves elephants so I added those in the middle with their hand lettered monogram. This became an image that they used through their day of. I had the RSVP card show the classic “Welcome to Vermont” sign that you see when entering the state. We decided to do a post card for the RSVP as it fit their overall feel and worked well. My personal favorite piece is the details card. On the front, I illustrated all the amazing things that the Equinox had to offer and on the back, it gave the guest a breakdown of the weekend’s schedule. The entire suite is wrapped in a rustic twine and topped off with a kraft hang tag with their crest printed on it. Overall, I love this suite as it’s classic without being stodgy or stuffy. Well done you two, congrats!

See some snaps of their wedding on the AaB blog here!

Ring of Fire: The Stamp!

I’ve blogged a few times about my love for stamps. For me, it’s the finishing piece that ties any envelope together. I awkwardly take great care when choosing stamps to put on my sample packs, etc. When it came time for my invite, I honestly lost sleep thinking about whether to do vintage stamps vs. current USPS stamps. I know, it’s weird. I almost fell off my chair when I learned that Johnny Cash will be getting his OWN STAMP this year with the USPS! Calling all Rock n’ Roll Brides: the is the stamp you want for you invites. Start getting ready, I’m very excited about this one.

Ampersand Delight

The saucy ampersand gets quite a bit of attention in the design world. There are loads of different versions of this little character and each one has such a unique personality. I have actually purchased fonts based on the fact that I like the way the ampersand looks. When a recent project called for me to bust out the watercolors and paint a few of these symbols, I welcomed the opportunity! Below are two of my favs from the project.

Real Fact: Cathrin and Dan

Most of my jobs are about creating a fun design that is inspired by a location, or the couple’s life together, etc. but sometimes you get to create art that helps support an already amazing story. When Cathrin first came to me to talk about her save the date, she wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do. Then her fiancé Dan chimed in and thought to use their engagement story as the basis for the save the date. Since it’s such a great story, I’ll let Cathrin tell it in her own words:

In September of 2011, Dan and I headed to Greece for a long-planned vacation.  Our first stop was Athens, where we spent a few fun days sightseeing and enjoying the Athenian Riviera.  Then we made our way to the incredibly beautiful island of Mykonos. On our first night, as we sat on the terrace of our hotel room watching the sunset, Dan tossed me a small red apple.  At first I thought he wanted to have a snack with our wine, but then I realized the apple had a gold ribbon tied to its stem, and attached to the ribbon was the cap of a Snapple ice tea bottle (my favorite).  The “Real Fact” inside the cap read:

“Real Fact #816:
In Ancient Greece, throwing an apple to a woman was considered a marriage proposal.”

When I looked back up at Dan, he was down on one knee, with a huge smile on his face and a very sparkly ring in his hand.  He asked me to spend the rest of my life with him, and of course I said yes!

So. Freaking. Clever. The best part was Dan’s Grandmother found the Snapple cap and gave it to him a few weeks before the trip. It was all meant to be. For these save the dates, I kept the design very simple. I illustrated the apple so it almost felt like torn tissue paper with rough edges. We replicated the Snapple cap and tied it on the apple card with bakers twine. Since all their friends and family knew the story, everyone appreciated the quirkiness of the design. Thanks for sharing guys!

Inspiration Station: Charlie’s

When I was in New Zealand I fell in love the natural juice company Charlie’s. Right away I was attracted to their amazing packaging. Paul would find me in the juice aisle examining each bottle like a total weirdo, but I couldn’t help it. The labels are almost all hand lettered, which I love for many reasons. They are also pretty slim in size which really lets the bright, bold colors of their juices shine through. With the start of the New Year, lots of new businesses are blossoming and logos are being born so Charlie’s is a great inspiration for what good branding looks like. Well done Charlie’s, wish we had you here in Brooklyn.
